If Newcastle United are able to land Marc Guehi during the current transfer window, Andy Cole believes the England international should be paired with Sven Botman on the Magpies' back line.
Botman and Fabian Schär were Newcastle's preferred center-back duo last season until Botman suffered a knee injury in March that prematurely ended his campaign. It's expected that Botman will return to action by the end of 2024, and when he does Cole thinks Guehi will be lined up alongside him, should Newcastle and Crystal Palace come to an agreement for Guehi's transfer to St. James' Park.
“I’m not saying that Schär isn’t a good center-back, because he is, but if Newcastle are looking to tidy up and become a stronger team, then Marc and Botman at the back wouldn’t be a bad partnership," Cole told Betfred.
Cole, who played for Newcastle from 1993 to 1995, is high on a potential Guehi acquisition by his former club. Speaking on the 24-year-old, Cole backed Guehi to take the step up from a mid-table Palace side to a Newcastle club with ambitions to climb back into the top four of the Premier League.
"Even before he went to the Euros, people believed in him and were talking about Gareth Southgate taking him to the competition," Cole said. "He would never let anybody down, but now I think everybody knows that this kid can perform at the highest level. He’s always had it in him, so if Newcastle got him, that would be a good coup.”
