Blues have relied on one player above the 'bang average' rest

Former Premier League winner Tim Sherwood has praised Cole Palmer's performances and believes that Chelsea needs more players like the 21-year-old.

Palmer moved to Stamford Bridge from Manchester City last summer in a £40 million deal, and has proved to be one of the signings of the season. The forward has scored 12 goals in 29 games for the Blues, and speaking to William Hill and Footy Accumulators’ podcast, No Tippy Tappy Football, Sherwood believes he's now the first name on the team-sheet.

“Cole Palmer is a good talent and I’m sure Pep Guardiola didn’t want to lose him, but he wanted regular game time,” said Sherwood.

“Credit to him for wanting to go somewhere where he thought he was going to play every week. When he first arrived, they had an influx of players and you wondered whether he might even be sat on the bench there as well, but now he’s the first name on Mauricio Pochettino’s team sheet!

“They need more Cole Palmers. A lot of the other players they need to get rid of, but they’re on eight-year contracts so good luck with that! It is very difficult to get rid of someone on big money and an eight-year deal."

Sherwood has hailed Palmer, but put the boot in on the rest of the signings Chelsea have made under the Todd Boehly regime, suggesting that they are nowhere near the calibre the Blues should be recruiting.

“The other players they’ve brought in are bang average,” he continued. “They’re so poor, some of them should be nowhere near a Chelsea shirt! We keep comparing them to the Chelsea of old with the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, but that is all we know. Now they’re a shadow of that, but they just have to accept it. We are looking at a different Chelsea now, this is a new generation.

“There are so many of them who need to actually run around, make a tackle and show some desire, or at least show something – I don’t see that with so many of their new recruits.”
