Rooney is struggling in the Championship.

Don Goodman believes that Tom Brady and the other owners of Birmingham CIty could sack Wayne Rooney if the club are dragged into a relegation battle.

Birmingham sit 15th in the Championship league table, and while they are still seven points clear of the bottom three, there is a long way to go in the current season, and Rooney’s side have just one win in their last five league games.

Goodman thinks that while O’Brady and his fellow owners will not be trigger-happy, there will be a point where they have to take action.

Speaking to BoyleSports who offer the latest EFL Betting, he said of Birmingham: “They have played Sheffield Wednesday, Blackburn and Rotherham. Two of those three they would have been expected to win, but they won one, drew one and lost one.

“They’ve got Coventry away, which will be a very tough game, then they’re away to Cardiff and then at home to Leicester. So it doesn’t really get that much easier. After that, they’ve got Plymouth, a cup final, Stoke, a cup final, Bristol City, which will be massive and then it’s Leeds. So they’ve got some tough-looking fixtures coming their way.

“While the owners will be patient, and he is their man, obviously they can’t keep not winning games of football. It’s one win in eight now, but if it’s one win in 12 then we might be having a different conversation.

“They drew some terrible attention to themselves with the phrase ‘no-fear football’. What is no-fear football? Are they trying to say John Eustace played with fear? They certainly did not. The owners have been a bit naive in their statement, in their timing of relieving John Eustace of his duties when things were going so well, so having gone this far, I would expect them to back Wayne Rooney to the hilt.

“The only reason why they might not be if they felt there was a genuine chance of actually getting sucked into a relegation battle. That’s a long way from happening at the moment, but if results continue like this then maybe they’ll have a rethink. As things stand, though, I’d expect Rooney to see the season out and be able to build on his squad in January.”
