The Scots open the tournament against Germany on Friday.

The 2024 European Championship kicks off this Friday as hosts Germany take on Scotland to open the tournament, as Steve Clarke's side look to be the first Scottish side to progress from a group stage at a major tournament.

If they are to reach the knockout rounds, they will need to progress from a group that also includes Switzerland and Hungary, and two players will be key to their success, according to Pat Nevin.

Speaking to Newbettingoffers.co.uk, the former Scottish international earmarked two midfielders as being the team's main men.

“Playing Scott McTominay in that attacking midfield role is massively important to this Scottish team as well as John McGinn," said Nevin.

"Those are the players that we’re looking at to score those goals and they’ve had a good record playing alongside each other for the past few years.

“McTominay will be a core player for us – absolutely pivotal. He is hard to fit in, though, we’ve got a really good midfield, so it’s just where he fits in but I just know he’ll be important wherever he is.”

Nevin is confident with those two in the side, Scotland are capable of causing an upset against the hosts on Friday and has dismissed suggestions that Germany will easily brush past the Scots.

Nevin added: “Realistically, I don’t think Scotland will get battered in their game against Germany.

“They genuinely won’t. We lost against France, England and the Netherlands, but they were just friendly games so if you think Scotland can’t take on the big teams, you’d be mistaken.

“I think we could lose 1-0 or pick up a 1-1 draw – I’ve got this big suspicion that Kai Havertz will score against us because I think he’s such a brilliant player! I do believe we’re capable of getting a draw out of it and I think that’ll be what happens.”
