Former Tottenham striker Teddy Sheringham believes that Arsenal would have a title-winning team if they sign Brentford's Ivan Toney.
Toney has been linked with a move away from Brentford since his return from a betting ban, but he has not matched his previous form over the second half of the season.
He went to Euro 2024 and acquitted himself well, but with a year left on his contract, it appears no serious bids have yet been made for the 28-year-old striker.
Instead, Brentford are said to be willing to accept £30 million for the player to avoid losing him for nothing at the end of the season.
Sheringham, speaking to onlinepoker.ltd, thinks a move by Mikel Arteta could be a masterstroke.
He said: “For me, I still think they need a centre forward who can finish things off. A player like Ivan Toney would be a massive addition for Arsenal and I think if they signed him, they would be even stronger title contenders.
“If they had a player like Toney, who is something a bit different to what they have, a big presence who can lead the line, then Arsenal would be the finished article. I'm very surprised that they're going for more defenders and not signing a striker.
“I like Gabriel Jesus, I think he's a very good player, but he's not going to score you 25 goals a season, which is what you need if you want to win a title. Arsenal need a number nine if they are going to go the distance in the title race.”
