Jordan Henderson deserves to be in the England squad at Euro 2024 this summer, says Gabriel Agbonlahor.
Henderson moved from the Saudi Pro League to the Eredivisie in January, which former England international Agbonlahor believes puts the 33-year-old in good standing to be included in Gareth Southgate's squad.
Speaking to Razed, Agbonlahor explained that Henderson's experience is still valuable to an otherwise young Three Lions midfield, and while he doesn't expect the former Liverpool man to start he does think Henderson will be influential.
"I look at Jordan Henderson and think at least he’s moved from Saudi Arabia to give himself a chance," Agbonlahor said. "The offer from Saudi was hard to turn down for anybody.
"Forget about what you believe in, you’re getting paid ridiculous money. He’s probably thought ‘I’m rich enough, I want to play in another tournament, play in a decent league and at a decent standard’. At least he’s made that decision. Other people would’ve taken £400k a week tax-free.
"He offers a lot of experience and he’s done a lot for England. Is he going to start? No, but is he going to come on at 70 minutes when you’re winning 2-1 in a quarter-final to make the right decisions and use your experience? Yes.
"He has to go because you can’t just have Conor Gallagher, Kobbie Mainoo, and Declan Rice, and especially now it’s a 26-man squad, he has to go."
