Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp believes that there is not a single current Manchester United player who would get into Alex Ferguson’s old side.
United are struggling under Erik ten Hag and are unlikely to finish in the top four by the time the season is over and, speaking to BetVictor, Redknapp was damning.
When asked about United, he replied: “I’m not sure about them – I thought they could finish in the top four at one point, but then they get beaten at home to Fulham and lose convincingly to Manchester City. I think they’re bang average to be honest – I said to someone the other night, ‘name me one player from this current United side who would get into Sir Alex Ferguson’s team’, and there isn’t one. That’s how it is now.
“I still make Tottenham favourites for fourth place. Aston Villa have been great too, but it’s beginning to look like a straight fight between those two clubs. At the moment, Manchester United are miles away – I don’t see them anywhere near winning the title or being close to doing so in the next few years either. I thought at one point they could finish in the top four this season, but then I watched that game against Fulham and I still reckon they’re miles away.”
However, Redknapp did see some green shoots in the form of Kobbie Mainoo and Rasmus Hojlund.
“Kobbie Mainoo will certainly go on and be a top player for Manchester United,” he added. “Looking at him now, he seems to be a fantastic talent. In terms of the Euros this summer, I think we’re quite loaded up with midfielders in that England team – we’ve got some of the best players in the world there in Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice. Gareth Southgate could take him in the squad as a youngster but that might not be possible, but there will certainly be major tournaments for him in the future.
“Can Rasmus Hojlund win the Premier League Golden Boot in the future? He can certainly be a contender. You look at his competition for the Golden Boot – I can see Mohamed Salah leaving for Saudi Arabia for the last few years of his career and making a fortune. Harry Kane’s obviously gone as well, so it’s wide open for that accolade. He could have as big of a chance as anybody in the future I think.”
