Harry Redknapp believes Xabi Alonso is the man to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, with another candidate in the frame.

Klopp announced his intention to step down from Liverpool as manager at the end of the season as he said he was growing fatigued at the club.

In his time at Anfield he has delivered every domestic trophy and the Champions League, and they currently sit top of this season’s Premier League table.

That meant that the announcement came as a huge shock to supporters and observers, but nonetheless speculation quickly turned to the potential replacements.

Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton, and Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen have been cited by many as sensible candidates, and speaking to sports betting site BetVictor, Redknapp said: “Roberto De Zerbi has been linked, he’s done a great job at Brighton and is very well respected – he could be in the running.

"However, Liverpool like to recruit from within and somebody like Alonso, who has been there before and knows the club, would be a worthy favourite for the role.”

Redknapp continued: “The timing of the announcement gives Liverpool a good amount of time to find their next manager and decide on who they want to replace him.

"Once he’d made up his mind he will have wanted to break the news sooner, rather than hanging on to it.

"He’d love to go out with a bang winning the Premier League this year and they’re definitely in with a chance. It is going to be tough because it is really tight at the top this season.”
