Dominic Solanke must show his “ruthless” side for Tottenham Hotspur if he is to be the man who can turn them into serious contenders, believes ex-striker Teddy Sheringham.
The forward joined the North London club from Bournemouth in a £55m transfer in August, penning a six-year deal with Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Solanke, who won his solitary cap for England back in 2017, enjoyed a prolific season with the Cherries last term, scoring 19 goals in 38 Premier League appearances.
But Sheringham believes he must be prepared to deliver on a bigger stage, at home and in the UEFA Europa League, if he is to prove himself as the missing link for Spurs.
“I think Dominic Solanke will be Tottenham’s most important player this season,” Sheringham told Prime Casino. “He’s the man that Ange and the club have placed a lot of faith in, to add the finishing touch.
“There’s an expectation that he will score the goals we need and will be the difference-maker in games that are tight.
“[But] he’s joined for a large fee and that adds a certain amount of pressure. He’s also making a step-up in his playing level.
“Tottenham create so many chances. When the games come thick and fast, when the energy levels are low, you need to take those.
“Solanke will need to be ruthless in front of goal. Tottenham will create the chances for him, [but] he has to take them.”
Tottenham and Solanke have endured a mixed start to the new season, with the latter suffering an ankle knock in their opening draw with Leicester City.
