Ian Wright explained how Arsenal would attempt to combat Manchester United striker Eric Cantona.
Arsenal and United have had a simmering rivalry since a scrap at Old Trafford in 1990, which saw both teams deducted points.
From then, the competition intensified with the appointment of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. There was a brief overlap between Wenger’s start at the club in 1996 and Cantona’s retirement in 1997, with Wright one of Arsenal’s strikers.
Speaking to Sky Bet, the former Arsenal forward said that his team-mates would try not to give him room on the ball.
He explained: “From an opponent looking in, one of the things we would say with Cantona is, do not give him too much space. Don’t let him have the space because if I’m playing for Manchester United and he’s in space, you’d want him to have it [the ball].
“Our plan was always to make sure that if he had the ball, we’d make sure to get in his face straight away.
“I would say to give him the ball all the time if he had space because he’d do something with it.”
