Aidan McGeady has hit out at Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice’s decision to play for England.
Rice swapped his national allegiance from Ireland to England while he was a West Ham player, and has been an integral part of the national team under Gareth Southgate.
Rice has three caps for Ireland and 58 so far for England, while Ayr United winger McGeady earned 93 for the Republic of Ireland.
Speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest Premier League odds , McGeady said: “I can’t agree with Declan Rice’s decision to dump Ireland for England
“It’s difficult but I don’t agree with what Declan Rice did. I can see why it happened because it probably identifies as English and until that point England had never come in from.
“But I think once you've done that, once you've made your mind up, I don't think you can really go back on it. Jack Grealish made a similar decision but not after playing for the senior team.
“But if you are selected for England, then straight away you're probably adding 40-50 million to your transfer value as well and straight away there's a potential for you to go to bigger clubs.
“Just because of the difference between England and Ireland in terms of exposure. Saying that, I can't agree with it because Ireland just put their faith in you to represent your country. To then go back on that, I can’t agree with it.”
