Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is the logical man to replace Jurgen Klopp.
The German announced that he would leave the club at the end of the season as he sensed he was becoming too fatigued to do the job at the level required.
That has led to speculation over which manager would be selected to take over, and many believe that Alonso is a frontrunner.
Not only are his Leverkusen side still unbeaten, but they are top the Bundesliga and appear favourites to beat Bayern Munich to the title.
Alonso is also a fan favourite from his time at Liverpool, and speaking to Sky Bet, Carragher sees him as a likely candidate.
“It’s the obvious choice [Xabi Alonso for Liverpool]. The only reason why I don’t think it could be Alonso, is if he doesn’t want to come,” he said.
“The great managers, even if you start with Alex Ferguson, he’s not great because of what he did at Manchester United, it’s what he did at Aberdeen. [José] Mourinho at Porto, [Jürgen] Klopp at Dortmund, Rafa Benitez who won the league at Valencia – you have to do something different and out there that most people can’t do.
“Leverkusen have never won the league before, to be the first guy to win the league there against Munich is pretty special. I don’t even think it’s just the Liverpool link, if there was a coach at Bayer Leverkusen doing that and the United or Arsenal job was up for grabs, that guy, whoever he was, would be in the reckoning.”
