Defender spills the beans on famous season.

Japp Stam has lifted the lid on Manchester United's dressing room during the club's historic treble-winning season of 1998-99.

Under the leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson, the Red Devils swept the board by winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in an era dominated by the club.

Speaking on William Hill’s podcast, Up Front with Simon Jordan, the legendary Dutch defender revealed the winning mentality in Ferguson's squad and how it almost led to blows during games.

Stam said: “In the season we won the Treble, we had a lot of draws towards the start but we grew throughout. We started to feel as a team that we could do very well and the opposition started to become scared of us. By the time it got to Christmas the belief was very strong.

“We were all pushing each other. Sir Alex was a big presence in the dressing room and he pushed us, but we also had players within the dressing room doing that, too. Roy Keane and Peter Schmeichel would almost be fighting at half-time, players were letting each other know that they needed to step up.

“Everybody was allowed to speak as long as you were doing your own job, but if you weren’t then people would let you know.”
