It was a thrilling night at Stamford Bridge on Thursday as Chelsea advanced to the 2022-23 UEFA Women's Champions League semi-finals, eliminating Olympique Lyonnais in the process.
Lyon erased a 1-0 first-leg deficit in regular time of Thursday's match, and went up 2-0 (2-1 on aggregate) deep into extra time. However, Chelsea were awarded a penalty in stoppage time after VAR helped determine that Lauren James had been taken down inside the area. After a painfully long few minutes, Maren Mjelde stepped up to the spot and coolly slotted her effort home, tying up the aggregate and forcing a shoot-out.
Mjelde was the first player up for the hosts, and once again beat Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler from the spot. The teams traded successful efforts until Wendie Renard had her kick saved in the third round, immediately followed by James being denied to start the fourth. Eventually it was up to Lindsey Horan to score to keep Lyon alive, but she was denied by Chelsea 'keeper Ann-Katrin Berger to end the match and see Chelsea through to the next round.
Chelsea will meet Barcelona in the semis, starting April 22 on DAZN.
