Late heroics propel Sheffield Wednesday to EFL Championship

Monday's EFL League One playoff final seemed destined for a penalty shootout, but Josh Windass had a different idea.

The Sheffield Wednesday midfielder's goal deep into stoppage time of extra time was the difference as Sheffield Wednesday defeated Barnsley 1-0 at Wembley Stadium.

Windass made a late run into the box after Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson had launched the ball downfield, with just 20 seconds remaining in the three minutes of added time. The Wednesday players won the ball in the Barnsley half and made one final run down the left flank in an attempt to stave off a shootout, with Lee Gregory lofting the ball into the penalty area for a wide-open Windass to meet with a diving header that proved too pacy for Barnsley goalkeeper Harry Isted to handle.
