Liverpool lost a hotly-contested match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, falling 2-1 to the home side and also seeing two players ejected.
But perhaps the biggest talking point came when the match was still 0-0, as Liverpool's Luis Diaz saw a goal called back due to offside. The obligatory VAR decision was over with fairly quickly after play had stopped, with the offside line graphic conspicuously absent.
PGMOL, the body responsible for match referees in England, issued a post-match statement admitting that the decision was incorrect.
"PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool," the statement read.
"The goal by Luiz Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene.
"PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error."
While the statement provided a bit of clarity, it was of little consolation to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who said the apology "doesn't help."
"Who does that help now?" Klopp said in his post-match press conference. "We had the situation in the Manchester United vs. Wolves game. Did they get points for it? It doesn't help.
"We will not get points for it so it doesn't help. Nobody expects 100 per cent right decisions on-field but I think we all thought when VAR came in it might make things easier."
