Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha thinks that signing Ivan Toney could be a ‘trap’.
Toney has returned from his betting ban at Brentford and has already scored for his current side, though he has also acknowledged that he wants to leave for a bigger club at the end of the season.
It will likely take a sizable bid to land a player also wanted by Arsenal and Chelsea, and speaking to Betfred, Saha suggested that his old club should not fall into the trap of pursuing high-profile players, and should instead focus on what the team really need.
“Manchester United don’t need to fall into the trap of pursuing a player just because their rivals are. You need to sign players that are right for you and that’s it,” he said.
However, he did admit that Toney could succeed at Old Trafford, but they needed to be sure he would fit in.
He added: “Ivan is a great striker, he’s proven in the Premier League and he’s got a lot of quality. He’s not played a lot of football recently, so he needs to rediscover his form and I’m sure that it won’t take him long to do so.
“He could be a good signing for Manchester United if they can get him for the right price, but they need to understand his motivation, his dream and shouldn’t just join the race to sign him because their rivals are interested in him. That’s not the point.”
