The Red Devils fell in penalties.

Manchester United were defeated on penalties by rivals Manchester City in the FA Community Shield on Saturday, but Erik ten Hag prefers to look at the bright side.

"Tough result to take," Ten Hag told ITV. "When the performance is right, when you lose everyone feels this. It hurts in your stomach.

"You have to feel pain and we have to hurt. We have to take this belief in to the league."

The Red Devils opened the scoring in the 82nd minute through Alejandro Garnacho, but Bernardo Silva's 89th-minute strike kept the match from being decided within the 90 minutes. In penalties, it took eight rounds before Manuel Akanji sealed the victory for the Sky Blues with a successful effort.

While the result stings for Ten Hag and his side, the Man United manager felt the performance was something to build on as the Red Devils prepare for their Premier League season opener against Fulham on Friday.

"We managed to be on an equal level with Man City and got [Marcus] Rashford high on the pitch and good defending," Ten Hag explained. "We created chances, we got pressure on the ball and in possession we had some very good chances from this so there are many positives we can take."
