The former defender has given his say on the shape of the title race.

Manchester City's 1-1 draw with Newcastle on Saturday saw them lose top spot in the Premier League after Liverpool leapfrogged Pep Guardiola's men with their 2-1 win over Wolves.

It may be early days in the Premier League title race, but after City talisman Rodri was ruled out for the rest of the campaign, some doubts have circled around the club's bid to win a fifth title in a row.

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson shares those doubts, telling Sports Casting that the reigning champions could finish third at the end of the season.

“Liverpool will finish second for me, ahead of Manchester City,” he asserted. “I just look at City and they’ve got all sorts of problems, both on and off the pitch.

"Arsenal on the other hand look hungry and mean. They really believe this is their year and I think it’ll be tough to finish above them.”

Liverpool's title bid could be helped by their signing of Federico Chiesa, with the Italian the only major addition this summer for the Reds.

Lawrenson thinks he could have a big part to play for Arne Slot's side, adding: “I think once Federico Chiesa gets into the starting XI, he’ll be difficult to leave out.

“He looked sharp when he came on against Bournemouth last weekend and it’s looking like a really good deal for Liverpool at the moment on paper.

“The main problem of course is his injury record, but Liverpool can cope with that because they’ve got many different players in those forward positions.

"I think he appreciates where he is and I reckon he’ll be really good for the club."
