If Everton are to succeed this year, Mark Lawrenson doesn't believe Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be the reason for it.
Calvert-Lewin has failed to break double digits in goals since the 2020-21 Premier League season, when he tallied 16 times (21 in all competitions). Since then, the Sheffield-born striker has struggled to find the back of the net for the Toffees, scoring just 14 times in 67 league appearances over the past three seasons.
Lawrenson has seen enough from the 27-year-old and feels that Everton should move on, possibly using the funds brought in from a Calvert-Lewin sale to acquire some attacking help as they look to avoid another relegation fight this season.
“Everton will just avoid a relegation scrap this year," Lawrenson told Paddy Power. "They should have been 2-0 up against Brighton [in their season-opening 3-0 loss] in fairness to them. Dominic Calvert-Lewin just doesn’t score. They’d be better off selling him and getting two or three players in.
“They have the right manager for the club [Sean Dyche], and I think he’s really, really good. They’re moving to the new ground next summer and whether they’re owned by different people yet, I don’t know but they need to be!
“I don’t see them being relegated. Dyche seems to be able to win against the teams around him and in the important matches.”
