The title race has been blown wide open in the last few weeks down to Manchester City's wretched run of form, but it's still Liverpool who lead the way as we head to the halfway point of the season.

Arne Slot's men are two points clear of Chelsea with a game in hand, while Arsenal are six points off the top of the table and Manchester City well off the pace in fifth behind Nottingham Forest.

Speaking exclusively to DAZN News , thanks to AceOdds,  about the championship picture, former England striker Michael Owen has gone over his pre-season predictions and recalled that he saw the trouble ahead for Pep Guardiola's side.

He said: "At the start of the season, I had Arsenal to win it. I actually had Manchester City in fourth. I got an incredible amount of stick and I might deserve an incredible amount of stick, but a lot of people might be eating their words, and it was quite a punchy statement, but I just thought when City go, they're going to go.

"I thought there were a lot of reasons before the season to suggest they could. All these charges, Pep's contract situation. That's of course, it's been extended now. A bad injury or whatever, but in my experience, when you go, you go.

"It might only be for a year, I remember Liverpool having a really poor season. They simply couldn't win and that was the height of their powers only a couple of years ago."

As for who will actually go on to win the league, Owen is caught in two minds. The ex-Liverpool man is either sticking to his guns and predicting an Arsenal win or tipping his former club to lift the trophy in May.

Adding: "I had Arsenal to win it and I had Liverpool and can't remember who else was in third. Oh, I had Aston Villa, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Man City as my top four, but I had Man City in fourth. I'm quite proud of that one at the moment. However, I had Aston Villa to come in the top four, so that's a bit of a crap one at the moment.

"There's a mixed bag from when I first started. If you ask me now, I still think Arsenal are the biggest challengers to Liverpool, but you've got to think that they've got the best chance now.

"So, if I had a gun to my head, I'd go for Liverpool, but the stubbornness in me says I said Arsenal are the start, so I'm not going to change my mind. I would say Liverpool now. That's where I'm standing at the minute."
