It wasn't the prettiest of performances, but Arsenal got the job done on Sunday at Old Trafford as they claimed a 1-0 victory against Manchester United.

The Gunners needed a victory to keep their Premier League title hopes alive, as Manchester City had won on Saturday and held a two-point lead atop the standings.

Leandro Trossard's 20th-minute goal was the difference as the Gunners reclaimed first place and ensured that the title race would go down to the last day of the season.

Speaking after Sunday's match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed both pleasure and disappointment about the proceedings against United, as the Gunners held on despite not dominating the way they have so many times during the campaign.

Arteta acknowledged that his team's defence stepped up when the attack sputtered, and explained that he would've liked to see his players take more chances against the Red Devils.

"We needed a result today in a really difficult place," Arteta told BBC Sport. "Our history was not in favour of a result today, there was so much at stake and we're happy with the result.

"We started the game really well and were dominant. We scored the goal and I think the goal led to slightly bad things because we started to play too safe, too sideways, too backwards with not enough structure.

"We started to give the ball away in good areas and that is a danger against them. But we defended well and didn't concede too much."

Arteta admitted that Arsenal's lack of experience as a legitimate title challenger showed on Sunday, as the demands of a tight race have forced the Gunners to be near-unbeatable for the past five months.

However, he reiterated his pride in the players for finding a way to get the needed result.

"Today we weren't composed, clean enough, consistent enough and doing the simple things right," he said. "That doesn't give you control of the game.

"Some of the players have not been in this position, they don't know what is at stake and how you feel emotionally to have to win and win and win from December or January.

"It is a phenomenal thing they are doing."
