In a world where football has become increasingly about money and winning it is always refreshing when a side goes back to its roots and does something for its community.

While top clubs are now international brands, the reality is that traditionally football teams represented communities. They drew their players from the local area, were supported by residents of their town or city and as much as they got from their fans, they gave back.

Things have come a long way from that, which is why it is so heart-warming to see National League North outfit Chorley FC opening their hearts, and their ground, this Christmas.

In a beautifully worded message on their social media platforms, the Magpies acknowledged that Christmas could be a very tough time for people - especially those who are alone, which they suggested was up to four percent of all people.

What makes their awareness of people's plight so much better is that they have decided to host a Christmas party for anyone who wants to attend.

Writing on Facebook they posted: "This year the club will be opening its doors from 12pm-3pm on Christmas Day for anyone who would like to call in.

"Although Christmas is a time for cheer and family, at Chorley FC we know that not everyone’s situation is the same.

"It is estimated that 4% of people spend Christmas on their own, and although some of this is by choice, a high percentage isn’t. What can we do at Chorley FC?

"Well, we can open the doors, put the heating on, boil the kettle, and ensure the beer (or wine) is cold for anyone who wants to come and join us.

"Mince Pies and other unhealthy snacks will be in abundance. So please don’t leave them to the staff.

"Anybody is welcome, whether you're home alone or want to get out of the house with the family for a couple of hours."

Who are Chorley FC?

Chorley FC, based in Lancashire, England, is a semi-professional football club playing in the National League North. Established in 1883, the club is nicknamed "The Magpies" due to their black-and-white striped kits.

They play their home games at Victory Park, a historic ground known for its passionate fanbase. Chorley has a history of competing in the FA Cup, including a memorable run to the fourth round in the 2020-21 season.

They are celebrated for their community spirit and their consistent presence in non-league football.
