Group B foes Nigeria and Canada start their 2023 Women's World Cup with a meeting in Melbourne.
The Nigerians are powerhouses of African women's football, but they've yet to translate continental success to the world stage.
The Super Falcons have won the Africa Women's Cup of Nations 11 times, which is astonishing on its own but even more telling when considering there have only been 14 such tournaments. Despite their regional domination, they've never made it past the round of 16 at the Women's World Cup, although that high mark came in 2019 in France and may indicate an upward trajectory.
They face a formidable Canada side in their tournament opener. The Canadians enter the competition as reigning Olympic champions who have reached the podium in each of the last three Summer Games, but in the World Cup their best finish is also a round of 16 exit four years ago.
Nigeria and Canada played a pair of friendlies in North America early last year, with the Canadians winning the first match 2-0 before the sides played to a 2-2 draw three days later. If the African side can keep the match against their decorated oppositon close, an upset could be in the cards.
