Barcelona break Real Madrid hearts with a 3-1 win

Barcelona break Real Madrid hearts with a 3-1 winDAZN
Real Madrid's winless run against Barcelona stretches to six games.

Three second half goals have put Barcelona in full control of this quarter-final tie despite a spirited performance from Real Madrid.

After failing to beat Barcelona in five competitive meetings, fans would expect this game to be a one-sided affair, but not in favour of Real Madrid.

The hosts took the lead within eight minutes after Olga Carmona opened the scoring and frustrated the defending champions all the way through the first half.

Barcelona failed to gain control of the midfield and it was showing with Aitana Bonmati and Leila Ouahabi being shown yellow cards in the 30th and 36th minute respectively.

Madrid almost made it two in the latter stages after a Claudia Zornoza’s free kick found Esther Gonzalez who hit the post with a volleyed effort.

However in the second half, Barcelona showed why they are the reigning European champions.

After an intervention by VAR and a pitch side monitor check, Barcelona was awarded a penalty six minutes into the second period following Carmona’s challenge on Caroline Graham Hansen. Up stepped Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas Segura who sent Misa the wrong way to draw the scores level.

This equaliser breathed life into Barcelona who were by far the better team and it seemed inevitable that they would go 2-1 up. After Aitana Bonmati Conca was tackled inside the Madrid box, Claudia Pina managed to get on the end of the loose ball and score Barcelona’s second in the 81st minute

Barcelona continued to push for another goal and it came in the dying seconds of the second half. A swift counterattack saw Patricia Guijarro find Putellas whose chipped effort made it 3-1 and put the defending champions in the driving seat ahead of the second leg at the Nou Camp.

For Madrid, it was a harsh result, Alberto Toril’s team showed tremendous heart, but it's Barcelona who take a two-goal lead back to Catalonia and will now be considered huge favourites to reach the semi-finals.
