Vinicius Junior is enjoying another stellar year with Real Madrid, and he's on pace to score more goals this season than in any other campaign in his career thus far.
The 23-year-old is also preparing to lead Brazil into this summer's expanded Copa America in the United States, with a shot at his first international trophy on the line.
Now, a former Brazil star and Ballon d'Or winner is backing Vinicius to claim the most coveted individual prize in world football. Speaking to Betfair, Rivaldo believes his countryman should elicit strong consideration for the Ballon d'Or, and laid out the scenario that would make him the front runner.
"Vini Jr scored two goals in Real Madrid's Champions League semi-final first leg at Bayern Munich and my compatriot is the standout player in Europe today," Rivaldo said.
"He has been one of his team's main players this season, showing a lot of desire. The team has adapted to his way of playing and he is a great candidate to win the Ballon d'Or if Real Madrid win the Champions League.
"He's already among the top three players in the world without being a champion of anything.
"Now, if Madrid get past Bayern next week and go on to win the Champions League, Vini has a great chance of being the best player of the season."
