Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has given his account of what happened when he confronted Arsenal skipper Patrick Vieira in the tunnel at Highbury.

The two teams met in February 2005 and the simmering rivalry boiled over once more even before a ball was kicked.

Vieira had confronted United defender Gary Neville as the teams were preparing to walk out, and as he did so, Keane came out of the dressing room.

A memorable exchange took place between Vieira and Keane, two long standing rivals, and with United winning 4-2 on the night, the received wisdom is that the Irishman came out on top.

Vieira and Keane are now more amicable with one another, and as the trio met again on Sky Bet, he recalled his version of events.

He said: “I came out and I knew there were noises. I forgot my armband so that’s why I had to go back up the tunnel.

“When I came back out the second time, I knew that something had gone on, and I remember what you [Gary] told me previously.

“I was quite relaxed with it actually, I never used to get involved in stuff like that, in the tunnel. I was agitated. My annoyance was that he went after Gary – you go after one, you go after all of us.”
