Ruud van Nistelrooy, Dwight Yorke and Wayne Rooney: Gary Neville picks Man Utd's best ever striker

Ruud van Nistelrooy, Dwight Yorke and Wayne Rooney: Gary Neville picks Man Utd's best ever strikerDAZN
The former Man Utd defender made a quick decision.

Gary Neville believes that Wayne Rooney is Manchester United’s best-ever striker.

Rooney won the Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson and won every domestic trophy as well, and after joining as a teenager from Everton he became one of the best players in the world.

Alongside Cristiano Ronaldo he was integral to what was Ferguson’s last great team at Old Trafford, and continued to notch goals for England and United well into his thirties.

Rooney finished his time at United as the club’s all-time highest goalscorer before returning to Everton, and then moving to DC United and Derby County.

He was sacked this week as manager of Birmingham City, but with the weight his name carries he could soon be back in football.

Neville played alongside Rooney, as well as United greats such as Ruud van Nistelrooy, Mark Hughes, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke and Eric Cantona, but he told Sky Bet that he would always pick Rooney as the best ever.

He said: “You get asked sometimes about the most underrated player and Wayne [Rooney] is up there. He’s not normally in conversation about the best Manchester United players but whenever I get asked about my best United 11, he’s always my number one centre forward.

“He’s the best by a mile, in terms of goals, effort, and assists.”
