The former Manchester City star could have worn the red of Liverpool.

Former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has explained why a potential move to Liverpool when he was a tennager did not happen.

Growing up, Aguero was a fan of Liverpool and a huge admirer of striker Michael Owen who he said inspired his career.

Despite being a fan of the Merseyside club, Aguero would eventually join Premier League rivals Manchester City and have a stellar career.

Aguero scored 260 goals in 390 games for Manchester City, including one of the most famous goals in English football history which saw the club win the Premier League for the first time back in 2012.

Aguero's former club take on Liverpool this weekend in a crucial Premier League game, with City one point ahead of their rivals at the top of the table.

Speaking to Stake, Aguero explained why a move to Liverpool never happened, saying: "I've read that they didn't go out for an offer because I was very young and it seemed like a risky bet for the transfer cost."

Aguero would eventually join Atletico Madrid at the age of 17 back in 2006 for a fee reported to be around €20 million which was the club's record transfer at the time.
