Shattering glass ceilings: Georgia Goulding on the impact of women in sports journalism and beyond for International Women's DayDAZN
As part of our International Women’s Day content, we interviewed several young journalists, content creators and people working in sport to understand what IWD means to them, the importance of opportunities and role models, their views on how accessible sport is to women, and also what lessons and advice they would give to young girls and women interested in getting involved in sport.

Georgia Goulding is a sports editor and journalist with NationalWorld. Georgia's media career has spanned more than seven years and transcended several sports including football, F1, tennis and boxing. Additionally, she has helped inspire countless young people to explore journalist opportunities, most notably through Her Football Hub, an independent digital platform focused on global stories within women's football.

It’s great to talk to you, Georgia because you’ve been a huge part of my journalism career. To start, can you tell me about your relationship with sport as a young woman?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to write, and when my love for sport and writing finally crossed paths, I knew there was nothing else in the world I would rather do. I’ve been working in sport media for more than seven years, and women’s sport in particular for five.
I have predominantly covered both men’s and women’s football, tennis, motorsport and combat sports. I’m most confident at the keyboard creating written content but I also present, record and edit.
In 2019, I co-founded the women’s football platform Her Football Hub with two wonderful friends.

I think I might know the answer to this one, but you’ve been so influential across so many women’s sports. What's your biggest achievement, either in sport or covering it?

There are so many moments in my career that I am proud of and grateful for. 2022 was a huge year for me and I crammed in so much that I’m so fortunate to look back and reflect on. Covering Euro 2022 is of course up there, as well as attending Shields vs Marshall — the UK’s first all-female boxing card — and working Silverstone for the W Series British Grand Prix.
I rounded off the year as Press on the red carpet for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards, an ultimate highlight. I also take immense pride in what we have built at Her Football Hub, not just our women’s football coverage, but helping to provide aspiring journalists and content creators with the opportunity to have their work published, interview key figures within the game, and attend games as official press.

With Her Football Hub, you’ve built up an incredible platform for supporting young people, but especially women in journalism. How can other organisations better support women, in not just covering sports, but also from a playing perspective?

Listening to and valuing the female voices within your team is such a simple ask, and yet it’s something a lot of women still go without in their workplace. I’ve lost count of the number of times during my career that an email has gone out to a team I’ve worked in that has praised ‘the lads’ for their hard work.
Being overlooked simply for being the only woman on a team, no matter how old you get, stings. It toughened me up and only further fuelled my passion to fly a sliver of the flag for women in sport, but that doesn’t justify us being brushed aside in the first place. Everyone loves sport and everyone deserves their space.

And to round this off, Do you think people still underestimate women in sport? Why or why not? Do you think it is changing?

Yes, I do think that. Unfortunately, there are still some figures who try to pour water on the flames with their negativity, and these are often people of influence, so their harmful views spread and encourage others.
But what is most underestimated is the community that women’s sport has created over the years. This base of passion and support is unwavering, with voices far louder than those who are nothing more than background noise. Yes, things are changing and improving all the time, and I want everyone who has ever had a hand in giving women’s sport the spotlight it deserves to raise a glass to themselves.
