Spain face Sweden in the first semifinal of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
As relatively newer powers in the women's game, the Spanish have never reached this stage of a World Cup. However, they are now firmly among the best in the world, and Spain head into Tuesday's match having eliminated fellow European sides Switzerland and the Netherlands in back-to-back knockout matches, with Sweden set to represent their toughest test to date.
The Swedes have a much longer history among the world's elite sides, and they have played in four previous semifinals. However, three of those matches ended in losses for Sweden, and the lone victory (in 2003) led to a heartbreaking golden goal defeat to Germany in the World Cup final.
Needless to say, Sweden will be looking to improve their narrative during this run, and that requires getting by a very good Spain side.
