Former Liverpool favourite Stan Collymore has thrown caution on the club's title aspirations, warning his former side that there is still a long time to go in the race to lift the trophy.
Arne Slot's side have a seven point lead at the top of the Premier League, despite dropping points in the 3-3 draw with Newcastle on Wednesday night. No team has failed to win the Premier League from such a comfortable margin at this stage of the season, but Collymore knows there is still a long way to go.
Speaking exclusively to DAZN News, thanks to NewBettingSites.uk, the former England striker believes the Reds can go on to win the title but it is still far too early for anyone to start thinking about becoming champions again.
"Well, I think they can win the Premier League. I wouldn't say it's a given," he said.
"And I think that we all in football media forget that we talk pretty much now from the gun firing on a season that Arsenal win their customary three or four games in August, and they've won the league, and this is the year.
"And we forget that's only four games. And now we're forgetting it's only a third of the season. We've got two out of three games left to play.
"Do I think Liverpool could drop the amount of points to see in Arsenal or City? I would say I do. Do I think it will happen? No, I don't. I just think that giving out the Premier League title at this stage is just foolish because I think that although Manchester City don't look like a team and a club and a manager at the moment that could put that 10-game winning run together, we know that they can.
"So I think that where I would place Liverpool at the moment, it's been an exceptional start in Europe. It's been an exceptional start in the Premier League.
"They've built as possibly as big a gap as it's possible to get. But I don't think anybody at Anfield is going to be looking over their shoulder thinking all they need to do is go into cruise control to win either title."
Manchester City got a much-needed boost by beating Nottingham Forest in the midweek games, but they remain nine points behind Liverpool going into the festive period. However, Collymore says that you cannot rule out Pep Guardiola and his team from still having a major say in the destination of the title despite the issues they've faced this season.
Adding: "The question is, does Pep Guardiola still have the gravitas? Does he still have the dressing room? Does he still have the players performing at their very best? I mean, De Bruyne has had a lot of injuries. Jack Grealish hasn't scored a goal this year. One assist this year for an output of £100 million player is insanely bad.
"They let Alvarez go, but there's no real backup to Haaland if he has lean spells. So they're definitely looking a lot more fragile in terms of being able to put that 10-game run together.
"But with a guy that's won six out of the last seven titles, has won titles everywhere he's been, he may have to go back to basics in his own dressing room, may have to get players to buy into what he's trying to do again.
"It's going to be very difficult. But a third in, literally a third in the season, I cannot discount a Pep Guardiola league team from doing anything."
