The legendary former Premier League midfielder is back in the English top-flight as a manager, and began his latest venture with three points.

Steven Gerrard, the former Liverpool and England midfielder regarded by many as one of the greatest players to grace the Premier League, led Aston Villa to a 2-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion in his managerial debut not just for the Midlands club but in the EPL outright.

Late goals in the closing 10 minutes from Ollie Watkins and Tyrone Mings gave the former Rangers gaffer the dream start to his first managerial role in the English top flight, but fellow former Prem star Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's time in charge of Manchester United continues to turn into a nightmare.

The Red Devils finished with 10 men as they were beaten by Watford 4-1. The score was 2-1 heading into stoppage time, but Harry Maguire's 69-minute red card for a second bookable offense preceded two additional goals from the Hornets to clinch a resounding win over the multi-time former domestic champions.

Elsewhere in the 3pm kick-offs, Burnley and Crystal Palace played out a 3-3 score draw as did Newcastle and Brentford; Norwich edged out Southampton 2-1 and Wolves defeated the in-form West Ham 1-0.

In the early kick-off, Chelsea cruised to a 3-0 win at Leicester which put them six points clear at the top of the table ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal's evening kick-off.
