How's the England striker settled in the Middle East?

The Saudi Pro League is now full of some of the biggest names in football.

Up and down the league, some familiar faces are taking football in the Middle East to the next level.

In this series we'll be profiling the best of them, as DAZN looks at the superstars of the Saudi Pro League, and this week it's Ivan Toney.

What's the story before Saudi?

Newcastle took a punt on the young Northampton teenager in 2015, but although he made his Premier League bow with the Magpies, he only managed 4 appearances with the club and, after a series of loan spells, moved to Peterborough United.

With Posh, the striker scored 49 goals in less than 100 games, and it wasn't before long that Brentford swooped to get Toney to spearhead their promotion challenge. 33 goals later and the Bees were a promoted club, where the forward just kept on scoring, hitting double figures in the top flight and earning an England call-up.

After making Gareth Southgate's squad for Euro 2024 - where he set up Harry Kane's goal against Slovakia - he opted for a new challenge away from West London.

How did he move to the Saudi Pro League?

Many expected Toney to move to a top six Premier League club in the summer, but instead made a £40 million transfer to Al-Ahli. Signing a contract until 2028.

The Saudi story so far...

Toney debuted for Al-Ahli in September, playing 90 minutes against Al-Nassr. His first goals came in the following fixture, netting twice in the club's 4-2 win against Damac.

Since the start of the season, the striker has played 12 times and scored 4 goals across all competitions. But while he has a number of goals in mind for his first season, Toney wouldn't share the total when asked by TalkSport.

He just hopes to score more than Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Hopefully more," he said. "To be fair, I'm competing with myself, I don't watch what other people are doing. As we know Ronaldo's a top player but I concentrate on myself and do what I can do best."
