Jude Bellingham hasn't taken long to make his mark on Euro 2024, and one former England star has compared him to one of the country's very best.

The Real Madrid man scored the winner for England in their opening match against Serbia during a man-of-the-match performance for Gareth Southgate's men.

Now, Teddy Sheringham is stating that Bellingham reminds him of someone he played with at Euro 96 and one of England's greatest-ever players, Paul Gascoigne.

“He's just got an aura about him that he wants to show how good he is,” he told Poker Sites

“He knows he can beat people very easily. It’s a very uncanny way in which he does it – very much like Paul Gascoigne used to do – although I would also put Phil Foden in that category too.

“I think we’re going to see glimpses of genius from both of them along the way, so we’re lucky that we’ve got two of them at the moment who are firing on all cylinders.”

Despite the praise for Bellingham, the former striker wasn't convinced by England's performance in their opening match against Serbia—especially in midfield.

As Southgate prepares his troops for their second game against Denmark today, Sheringham has called for the manager to rethink the Trent Alexander-Arnold choice in the middle.

“I thought the midfield was disjointed again against Serbia – I don’t like defenders playing in midfield and full-backs coming in,” he added.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold has played as a right-back all his life – he knows how to get the ball, receive it on his right foot and look for what he wants – and that positioning at full-back allows him to play those unbelievable passes. He’s a bit like David Beckham – when he got the ball out wide, he had that lovely awareness of knowing what he wanted to do before he did it.

“However, when you play Trent in centre midfield, it’s not the same position or role. We know he can find lovely passes – and I don’t mind him playing at right-back and wandering into midfield at times – but you receive balls differently when you’re playing in midfield and I don’t think he knows how to do that as naturally as someone like Kobbie Mainoo or Adam Wharton.

“If you’re going to pick someone to sit alongside Declan Rice, I would pick one of those two to start against Denmark – someone who can do the role naturally.”
