Rasmus Hojlund's signing is proof that Manchester United no longer competes for the top transfer targets, according to Teddy Sheringham.

The former Red Devil made the harsh assessment following Hojlund's first season at Old Trafford, in which the 21-year-old forward scored 16 times across all competitions for Erik ten Hag's side.

While Hojlund's numbers aren't poor, they also aren't at the level of a top-tier striker that United used to boast in the past.

Speaking on behalf of BoyleSports, who offer the latest Euro 2024 betting, Sheringham said:  "First and foremost, the signing of Rasmus Hojlund comes from United’s failure to not compete for the players at the very top level last summer, like Harry Kane.

“Years ago under Sir Alex [Ferguson], the club would’ve been in the hunt for Harry Kane and other players at the very top level who perform week in and week out.

“They didn't do that and they bought a second best in Hojlund. I think he has done okay, he works hard and has to feed off scraps.

“Overall I think he has done okay and United should be thankful that he works so hard and you can’t forget that he is still young and learning his way.”
