'The league table doesn't tell you anything' - Arne Slot not ready to celebrate Liverpool's Champions League dominance after Lille victory

'The league table doesn't tell you anything' - Arne Slot not ready to celebrate Liverpool's Champions League dominance after Lille victoryDAZN

Liverpool continued their perfect run through the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League with a 2-1 victory over visiting Lille on Tuesday, giving the Reds seven wins in seven matches so far.

The result was never assured for the Reds, whose early lead was nullified just past the hour mark when Lille striker Jonathan David pounced on a loose ball to score the equaliser. Unfortunately for the French side, the deadlock only lasted for a few minutes as Harvey Elliott scored the winner in the 67th minute.

Regardless, the win assured that Liverpool will finish the league phase in second place at worst, with the Reds leading the standings ahead of the final matchday later this month.

It's a situation that Liverpool hoped for at the start of the campaign, although Arne Slot isn't putting much stock in the standings given the number of big-name clubs currently mired further down the table.

"We are happy that we are top eight," the Liverpool manager told Amazon Prime. "This league table doesn't tell you anything.

"Maybe the number 24 is better than the number 16 but the 16 had an easier draw. We want to be top but we have to wait and see if it's an advantage."

Slot gave praise to Lille, who entered the match unbeaten in 21 matches, but also bemoaned the way the Ligue 1 side was allowed the opportunity for their goal.

"As a manager, I'm a bit more impressed than the crowd or the people who watch the TV," Slot said. "I knew they were 21 games unbeaten but they beat both Real and Atletico Madrid and they did this without the best players in the world, with the greatest respect.

"I wasn't happy about one chance conceded and one goal conceded."
