Liverpool and England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold described one tactical approach from Jurgen Klopp that stays constant, regardless of the opponent.
Klopp has turned Liverpool into a blistering attacking force and in the summer he brought in four midfielders to overhaul the squad.
While they now look a little short in the run-in for the Premier League title, their showing in the current campaign has been a huge improvement on their disappointing showing last season.
Alexander-Arnold is often at the heart of Liverpool’s best play given his attacking aptitude, technique and passing range, and he told Sky Bet that the German manager will always play with four players in the middle of the pitch.
The right-back said: “So, I think that the outline of it is, we work on it – the shell. It’s then, within that, you have freedom. So, it’s like, ok we are always going to have four in the middle of the pitch.
“At any given time, whether it’s the midfield three and the [number] nine that comes in and makes that four, or a fullback comes in and makes that four, we are always going to have that. And that’s identifying where and when that is.
“Maybe one of the centre midfielders will drop into the back three, well into the backline, that means people have got to get in there [the centre of the pitch]. It doesn’t matter who it is, and then it’s just about seeing it and going, ‘he’s gone there, so I need to go there’.
“Mo comes into it at a point where if it’s switching out, we need someone who is always wide. So sometimes I might be wide, Mo will be inside like the second striker. Or it might be the right midfielder that goes out there.
“It might be Harvey [Elliott], or Dom [Szoboszlai] who goes out there, and I come in and do their job in there. It does, it’s just really flexible.”
