There are changes afoot for referees and players.

Reports suggest that the International Football Association Board (IFAB) will experiment with the use of a new blue card.

It is the first time that a new card was introduced to football since the World Cup in 1970, and will be used to censure particular transgressions on the pitch, with IFAB hoping to target behaviour that “might be the cancer that kills football.”

The Telegraph reports that the FA Cup and Women’s FA Cup are two tournaments that could have the blue card introduced.

What is the blue card in football?

If you are given a blue card by the match referee, that means that you will have to leave the pitch for a sin-bin, for a period of 10 minutes.

The card will be introduced after the upcoming 2024 European Championship but will feature in at least some tournaments for the 2024/25 season.

What are blue cards given to players for?

Players and other club staff can be given a blue card for dissent and cynical tackles.

Will a player be sent off for a blue card?

It is not yet known for sure, but the report states that a blue card will count as if it were a yellow card when it comes to accumulative cards that result in a sending-off.

Just as two yellows result in a red card, so would one yellow and one blue, or two blue cards.
