Group C of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup is comprised of Spain, Costa Rica, Japan and Zambia.
The Spanish side are expected to top the group, as their star-studded squad are arguably a threat to win the entire tournament. Spain's position near the top of the women's football pyramid is a relatively new one, as they have only ever qualified for the previous two WWCs and were a relative afterthought in UEFA around a decade ago.
However, the rise of women's football in Spain has thrusted the national team to No. 6 in the world, and with the ongoing investment in the game they can reasonably expect to remain inside the top 10 for years to come.
While Spain's rise is a recent one, Japan have been a big player in the sport for decades and should battle for top spot in the group. The Japanese were World Cup champions just over a decade ago and finished second at Canada 2015, so they won't be pushovers.
Rounding out the group are Costa Rica and debutantes Zambia, neither of whom are expected to provide too much opposition for the top two teams.
