Emmanuel Petit has identified Ryan Gravenberch and Moises Caicedo as the best central midifelders in the Premier League today.

Petit knows something about quality midfields, having been a Premier League winner with Arsenal in 1997-98 and a member of the France side that claimed the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. The retired midfielder was named to the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in 1998-99 and has played alongside some of the best players of his generation.

Casting an eye on the current crop of midfielders currently ruling England's top flight, Petit looked to two of the top teams in the circuit for his two best.

"Well, I would probably say Gravenberch from Liverpool and Caicedo at Chelsea [are the best right now]," Petit told Casino Utan Spelpaus.

"Caicedo, from what happened since he joined Chelsea, this season he has been a rock in the midfield. He was a little bit tired recently, but from the start of the season, I think he has been amazing.

"Gravenberch changed his position as well. You can see that the confidence is completely different with [current Liverpool manager Arne] Slot than it was with [former Liverpool boss Jurgen] Klopp. I think he needed one year to settle perfectly into the first eleven.

"Also, Slot changed the way they played. They play with more composure; you know it’s not now in transition all the time. They control the ball more, in terms of position. So that suits him the most.

"You can see that he has become a very, very good player at Liverpool and is a crucial part of the midfield and the way that Slot wants to play."
