Former Liverpool midfielder Dirk Kuyt believes Mohamed Salah could damage his legacy at Liverpool if he decides to accept a move to the Saudi Pro League's Al Ittihad.
It's been no secret that Al Ittihad are eager to sign Salah after an initial bid of £100m was rejected by Liverpool. Now with just a day to go until the transfer window closes in Saudi Arabia, there are many reports that Al Ittihad will mount a bid in the region of £200m in an attempt to take Salah away from Anfield.
If Al Ittihad do manage to sign Salah, it will be a huge loss for Liverpool with the Egyptian playing a massive part in the team's recent success under manager Jurgen Klopp, but in addition to that, there is also the question as to what a move to a lesser league would do for Salah's legacy at Liverpool.
Speaking to BettingSites.co.uk, Kuyt believes Salah leaving Liverpool would hurt a lot of fans after what he has done for the club.
"Salah’s legacy depends on which stage he leaves. What he’s done for Liverpool will always be very special, and sometimes it’s hard to predict what his departure would do to supporters," Kuyt said.
"There are a lot of people who are not happy with what’s happening in Saudi, but the same thing happened in the 80s when Italy were spending a lot to get the best players and league.
"Then Spain did it, and then England did it. However, it’s very strange as Saudi Arabia are not a country who were competing with the best teams.
"At the end of the day, I'm the type of guy who thinks every decision should be respected. If Salah leaves, I think it would hurt a lot of fans as he’s such a good guy and Liverpool, especially now, couldn’t function at their best without him."
