With WWE Summerslam taking place this weekend in Las Vegas, the company of course explored all avenues to put on the best show for the fans, including inviting one of the best boxers of all time, Mike Tyson.
According to a report by Mike Johnson of PW Insider, the former heavyweight champion of the world was approached by WWE to voice a video package which will hype up the main event of the evening between Roman Reigns and John Cena.
'Iron Mike' would have been an ideal choice to have on board, as his name still resonates with fight fans of all ages and affiliations as one of the best to ever do it. However the report says attempts to lock him in for Saturday’s event were unsuccessful.
Last seen in a ring in November 2020, Tyson put on an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr, and looked exceptionally good for his 55 years of age. He was strongly linked to a return to the ring in 2021, but efforts to find a suitable opponent — including talks with longtime rival Evander Holyfield — have yet to yield any concrete results.
A massive wrestling fan, Tyson appeared as referee for the headline match between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 14 at the height of his fame in 1998, boosting the footprint of the then-WWF.
He has also made multiple appearances in All Elite Wrestling over the last 12-18 months.
