David Benavidez didn't expect his weekend to go quite like this.
On Friday, the undefeated WBC super middleweight champion beat himself on the scale by weighing 2.8 pounds overweight ahead of his slated title defense against Roamer Alexis Angulo on Saturday night. Due to that, Benavidez will have to vacate the title.
"I'm very disappointed," Benavidez told Showtime after missing weight. "Obviously, this is my first time missing weight. Like I said, very disappointed losing the title on the scale, but I've still got a job to do tomorrow.
"I lose the title," he added, "but I'm still going to win tomorrow."
Coming in at nearly three pounds overweight, Benavidez (22-0, 19 KOs) didn't even bother making a second attempt at trying to make weight. He didn't bother making excuses, either, although he might have hinted toward training during a pandemic as an insurmountable obstacle in this case.
"I put the blame on myself," Benavidez continued. "Those last three pounds wouldn't come off. Maybe not having the proper things I need, you know, sauna, and I was only able to go to the gym for an hour a day since I got here. It's just a couple different things, but obviously I'm very disappointed."
Benavidez vs. Angulo will still headline Showtime's card from the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn. on Saturday night.
Benavidez, 23, won the title last September, when he knocked out Anthony Dirrell.
