Gervonta Davis has ruled out a rematch with Rolly Romero following his sixth-round stoppage win in Brooklyn. The brash pair had crossed the line throughout the build-up to their fight, but it was ‘Tank’s’ boasts that carried more value as he chipped away at Romero before finding the necessary shot to end the fight in a blink of the eye.
With Romero now dispatched, and Davis seeking a fresh challenge, it appears that his focus is on the leading names at 135lbs. Devin Haney and George Kambosos will contest all the world titles next week and there’s the likes of Vasiliy Lomachenko and Ryan Garcia waiting for their shot. Davis is very much part of this mix as he aims to look forward rather than facing Romero again.
“I don’t think people deserve a rematch if they get knocked out like that,” said Davis when speaking at the post-fight press conference. "I’m not trying to be funny. If it was a good fight leading up to the knockout, like in the ninth round or the 10th round, and somebody caught him with a good shot. I don’t think we need a rematch, but I’m all ears if anybody else wants to fight me at 135. I feel comfortable at 135.”
