One of the biggest stars in pro wrestling, Roman Reigns’ incredible rise has saw him become the most dominant wrestling champion of the modern era.
Here, DAZN looks at the remarkable achievements of Roman Reigns.
Who is Roman Reigns?
A member of the famous wrestling Anoa’i family, Reigns’ path into the sport came following a stop-start career as an American football player.
Following spells with the Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Edmonton Eskimos, Reigns made the choice to go into professional wrestling.
Hanging about in developmental territories such as FCW and then NXT, Reigns was identified as someone with a bright future early on.
Already familiar with fellow developmental stars, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, Reigns made the jump to the main roster with his colleagues in 2012 as all three arrived in WWE as The Shield.
Booked strongly from the beginning, The Shield were an instant success as they took part in many memorable feuds including memorable battles with The Wyatt Family and the reformed Evolution.
Like all great factions, The Shield’s time eventually had to end and that occurred in 2014 when Rollins turned his back on his former friends.
Now a singles star, Reigns’ rise to the top was not without problems as fans resented the preferential treatment that went the way of Reigns.
After winning the 2015 Royal Rumble, Reigns was booed heavily, and that reaction followed him into Wrestlemania the same year as he failed to become world champion after Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase to become world champion.
Reigns would eventually take the title at that year’s Survivor Series but his reign lasted less than five minutes as he was the victim of a cash-in again, this time by Sheamus.
Eventually regaining the crown, Reigns would still struggle in his role as champion as he still couldn’t find a way to appeal to the WWE fans.
Following a lengthy absence during the COVID-19 pandemic, Reigns was quickly thrust into the main event scene again and was once again world champion.
Aligning himself with Paul Heyman and soon after forming The Bloodline, Reigns is now one of the best performers in pro wrestling and after defeating Cody Rhodes at Wrestlemania 39, his incredible run continues.
