It's been no secret that during his recent trip to the United States that Anthony Joshua has been visiting numerous coaches and boxing gyms as he formulates a gameplan to win back his WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles from Oleksandr Usyk early next year.
Mike Tyson's former trainer Ronnie Shields and Eddy Reynoso were just two of the coaches Joshua is believed to have spoken to.
On the latest episode of JABS, Chris Mannix and Sergio Mora debated who would be the better fit for the London 2012 gold medalist.
"I like Ronnie Shields. I like Ronnie Shields for many reasons," Mora said.
"One, he was an ex-fighter, two, he has a lot of experience with great fighters, one of them being Mike Tyson. He was in Vernon Forrest’s corner, Pernell Whitaker I mean, these are great fighters who know how to fight behind a jab, but also know how to fight on the inside."
Mannix on the other hand believes Mexico's Reynoso would be the perfect fit for Joshua, but not just because he has a very successful stable of fighters which includes Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
"Eddy Reynoso has shown me over the last few years that he is a very offensively oriented coach," he said.
"You look at Canelo, Canelo has become kind of a hunter in recent years under Eddie Reynoso. Ryan Garcia is an offensively oriented fighter, and Oscar Valdez when he won his title did it in spectacular knockout fashion over the naturally bigger Miguel Berchelt," Mannix went onto explain.
Mora however exposed a major flaw if AJ did indeed choose to align himself with Reynoso's gym.
"I think there's gonna be language barrier, you're going to need detailed instructions to give to Anthony Joshua and I think the right words are going to be missed if Reynoso doesn't speak fluent English.
"Joshua doesn't always have to fight behind the jab. When he does square up he can muscle around fighters squared up," Mora went onto explain when discussing how Shields could benefit Joshua.
"I think Ronnie Shields is a perfect fit mentally physically, stylistically. That's my choice."
