Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is showing no signs of stopping after his team revealed his desire to move up to the cruiserweight division in search of a fifth title in a different weight class at Tuesday's WBC convention.
They have their sights set on Congolese Ilunga Makabu, owner of the WBC title. During the mandatory fight session, trainer Eddy Reynoso took his turn at the microphone to reveal his intentions to move up to the surprise of all in attendance.
"It's the beauty of the sport, it's a wonderful situation. Canelo once again taking an unexpected risk, surprising the world. Cruiserweight is a very complicated division, very big. Ilunga Makabu is a very big, strong fighter. That's history and I'm happy about it. It's something that surprised me a lot," said WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman of Mexico.
Canelo Alvarez became the first fighter in history to be crowned undisputed super middleweight champion after beating Caleb Plant in Las Vegas at the start of the month and said he would be waiting for "some other crazy thing from Eddy" for his next fight.
"We've talked about it in the team and it's a move that brings us new challenges and that's what we're looking for. To continue making history. We have had cordial talks with Makabu's team and there is even the possibility of the fight going to Congo," said the two-time Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) Coach of the Year in an interview.
Reynoso told DAZN News that this move between divisions will not affect Canelo's status as undisputed champion, as he intends to preserve his status, while experimenting in a new division and said that one of his plans is to close the trilogy with Gennadiy Golovkin in a mega fight in his native Guadalajara, Mexico, next year.
