Their last men's boxing tournament win at a Games came courtesy of Andre Ward back in 2004.

The USA came close to earning their first Olympic gold medal in a men's boxing discipline in 17 years on Sunday, but ultimately fell twice at the final hurdle as Keyshawn Davis and Richard Torrez Jr. each picked up silver medals in Tokyo.

The impressive Davis was outpointed by one of several superb Cuban entries, Andy Cruz, in the men's lightweight final. Cruz became the fourth member of his nation to claim a boxing gold medal, following welterweight Roniel Iglesias, light heavyweight Arlen Lopez, and heavyweight Julio la Cruz.

Cruz's victory was his first Olympic gold, while his three compatriots all doubled up with their Tokyo 2020 success.

Later on, Richard Torrez Jr. came up short against Uzbekistan's Bakhodir Jalolov in the super-heavyweight finale. The 22-year-old appears to have a bright future but had to settle for silver at the Kokugikan Arena.

Nonetheless, he became the first super heavyweight to medal for the U.S. since Riddick Bowe earned silver in Seoul back in 1988.

America's results in men's Olympic boxing have come under scrutiny over recent years with the likes of Deontay Wilder and Errol Spence Jr. unable to go all the way. In addition, some of those results — especially's Spence's — were regarded as extremely controversial at the time.
