It's not the fight Devin Haney wanted. Still, it's the one he was obligated to take as he put the IBF, WBA (super), WBC, and WBO belts on the line Saturday against George Kambosos Jr. from Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia. So how could Haney improve on his performance from their first fight in June?
Haney showed why he's the undisputed lightweight champion by outclassing Kambosos from start to finish with superior boxing, adjusting on the fly, and showing the power many fans have wanted to see from him to win by unanimous decision (119-109, 118-110, 118-110). DAZN scored the fight 118-110 for Haney.
Kambosos came out, switching stances in an attempt to confuse Haney. It took two rounds for Haney to figure out Kambosos' rhythm and timing. Haney reaffirmed what he did four months ago for the remaining ten rounds. He fought mostly standing in the middle of the ring, blasting the jab, sitting on his punches, and blasting one power shot after another.
The attack stymied Kambosos, who looked confused and had a secondary plan after Haney neutralized the first one to lose his second consecutive fight to "The Dream".
Haney has plenty of options. He could move up to 140 pounds or remain at 135 and wait for fights against either Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia, or Vasiliy Lomachenko.
“We’re taking on all-comers,” Haney said in his post-fight interview. “No matter who it is, we want to fight the best fighters in the world. I believe I’m the best fighter in the world. Whoever it is next, bring ‘em on."
